La Tomates! Various Types Of Tomatoes

Tomatoes have a flavor that’s both sweet and savory, a divine combination of natural sugar and acidity. They are incredibly versatile both as a fridge and pantry staple that can improve anything: salad, pasta, sandwiches, and even pie!

Tomatoes play an important role in Indian households as they are used in many vegetables and Indian curries. People who want to lose weight can have an intake of tomato juice. They also have skin benefits like reducing the risk of sunburn, wound healing, removing dead skin cells, anti-aging properties etc.

Tomatoes were introduced to England in 1517 and remained there as a garden curiosity for many years. Today, China is the largest producer of tomatoes. They take 75 to 95 days to mature. A healthy tomato yield requires the planting of a variety of it. Homegrown tomatoes are usually just as fresh as the ones grown in the garden.

Below is a list of some types of tomatoes: 

1. CHERRY TOMATOES

This type of tomato has several vitamins and minerals. The shape of these are round and they are very juicy. They are available in red, orange, yellow, and purple color. Sweet and tangy cherry tomatoes can be cut, grilled, sauced, and can even be eaten as a raw snack. They are best suited for salads and kebabs.

2. ROMA TOMATOES

The other name of this type is plum tomatoes. They are bigger in size as compared to cherry and grape tomatoes. They have fibers in them. They are not used in slicing. Generally popular in salads, these tomatoes are also a good choice for canning or making sauces. Roasting roma tomatoes in the oven and using it to create a tomato pesto or bruschetta topping gives more intense flavor. 

3. COCKTAIL TOMATOES

Stewed tomatoes and poached eggs, grilled chicken, and marinated tomatoes use this type of tomato. They have a sweet and fruity aftertaste. They taste extravagant in BBQ, stuffing in vegetables etc. They have soft walls and a meaty texture.

4. GRAPE TOMATOES

These are about half the size of cherry tomatoes. They have an oblong shape and don’t contain much water in them. One grape tomato weighs 8 grams. These are best in salads, pasta, chicken, or fish. They come in a variety of colors. They have a thicker skin and can be used as a great ingredient in main course.

5. HEIRLOOM TOMATOES

These vary in colors and sizes and range from pale yellow to bright green to deep purplish red. The seeds of these tomatoes are saved and passed down without cross-pollinating with other types. A normal heirloom tomato weighs 123 grams and contains antioxidants and vitamin A which is good for vision. 

6. BEEFSTEAK TOMATOES

These hold the shape perfectly when being thinly sliced because they are large, sturdy, and firm enough. One beefsteak tomato weighs 182 grams. They contain fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants. Beefsteak tomatoes go best with sandwiches, hamburgers, pizzas and are also used in making sauces.

7. YELLOW TOMATOES

As compared to the red tomatoes, yellow tomatoes are less acidic and have a different nutritional value. They are known for their meaty texture and larger size that lends itself easily into slicing. Yellow Tomato is also called lemon boy. These are disease-resistant and easy to grow. 

8. GREEN TOMATOES

Any tomato that hasn’t ripened out can be a green tomato. Green tomatoes don’t taste anything like the sweet, juicy specimens. These can be found in the market around the fall when temperatures have dropped and it isn’t warm enough to retain the tomatoes further. 

9. PEAR TOMATOES

These are known for their small and pear shape. They are typically yellow but can also be red and orange sometimes and are sweet in taste. Also known as teardrop tomatoes, these are best used for salads and snacking. Their low acidity and nice flavor make them popular with kids.

10. CAMPARI TOMATOES

These are known for their juiciness, high sugar level, and low acidity. They are deep red and larger than cherry tomato but smaller and rounder than a plum tomato. Campari tomatoes are often sold as tomatoes on the vine in supermarkets, a category of tomato that has been increasingly popular over the years. They weigh about 50 grams.
