There is probably nothing more fun than planning a themed party. You want to make it interesting, hedgy. Most importantly, you want it to be such a success that people start thinking of the next party you will host: you need to make it Mexican!

The problem is not the music, the Mariachis will take care of that. And, for sure, the tequila will help everyone join and dance along. But what about the food? What shall you serve?

Luckily for you, Mexico has a great deal of dishes to offer and it is almost impossible to point our fingers to just one single food: enchiladas, tacos, tortillas, chilaquiles. So many options!  So, if you are already planning your party, don’t worry about the food, here is a list of must-serve for your gathering!

  1. Tacos: Maybe pointing at one thing is easier than we thought. In a Mexican-themed party, you cannot miss the opportunity to serve tacos, of course. Tacos, as you probably already know, are stuffed tortillas. And there are several pros to them. You can eat them standing, just in case you have more guests than chairs. Secondly, you can adapt the stuffing and please everyone, vegan, vegetarians or meat-eaters.
  2. Tamales: this is another classic Mexican food. Tamales are, basically, a corn husk filled with steamed corn dough. However, you can also use guacamole, an avocado-based paste, or chicken. Tamales can also be sweet.
  3. Quesadillas: similar to tacos, quesadillas are great to eat standing. They are tortilla wraps that can also be stuffed with different filings such as corn smut or squash blossoms.
  4. Mexican rice: this is more than just a Mexican staple. So much so recipes vary according to each person, how do you make Mexican rice? Following your preferred recipe, you can present it in small servings, like an appetizer. It is both filling and delicious.
  5. Tlayuda: or to make it simpler, Mexican pizza. Similar to other traditional dishes, it is corn based preparations and they are flatter than other types of pizzas and the toppings can include avocado, beans, peppers and more.
  6. Gorditas: these are more like sandwiches and it is a great option as finger food. Gorditas are savory corn cakes and they are traditionally stuffed with chorizo or picadillo. They are gluten-free and, depending on the filling, you can make them vegan.
  7. White pozole: this can be presented in small pots too as pozole is a stew-like dish. It is considered an elegant dish, served in important events and celebrations. The main ingredients are onion, garlic, hominy and pork and the cooking is rather simple.
  8. Pan de elote: this is like cornbread. It is a sweet, milk-based delicacy. As it is a cake, you can serve this as the dessert.
  9. Pico de gallo: of course, this dish had to be on the list. Pico de gallo can be presented as a dip. It consists of onion, tomatoes, peppers, cilantro and lime and you can serve it along with some chips or chicken bruschettas.
  10. Marquesitas: this is another option for dessert which is highly popular in Mexican parks. Filled with chocolate, caramel or custard, this rolled dough is easy to make and tasty to have.
  11. Chocoflan: only the name sounds delicious, doesn’t it? Chocoflan is a dessert that has the best of both worlds: chocolate and flan. As if that wasn’t enough, it has a caramel topping. However, there is a con to it: it is not the best option if you are having a large number of guests over, unless you are ready to make several of them.
